Eco-Ambassadors

PHS Eco Group have become eco-ambassadors after their environmental work was recognised by the County Council. The group have been busy engaging in environmentally friendly activities, such as making bird boxes and insect homes, letter picking, planting trees, together with hosting a visit from Abbey Park Middle School students.

The group will be organising a bat detecting evening and also plan to start a gardening club and develop a Green Day to raise awareness of green issues.

Their efforts were recognised by Amy Lunt, Worcestershire's Assistant Learning for Sustainability Officer, who visited the school and awarded the students Eco-ambassador Certificates.

Clive Corbett said: "The Eco-group has got out there and done things, and has made us think again about recycling attitudes. They are doing important work and have become the school's conscience on sustainable issues".

Gold Artsmark Award

PHS is celebrating after receiving a Gold Artsmark Award in recognition of the high levels of arts provision available to students. It is hoped that the award will lead to further development in the arts and strengthen access to the arts within the community.A celebration showcase is planned for later in the year.

ANOTHER FABULOUS GCSE YEAR

76% of Pershore High School's Year 11 class of 2010 has secured five or more A* to C passes. This excellent performance means that a five A* to C GCSE pass rate in excess of 70% has been achieved for the second year running. The five A* to C rate including English and Mathematics is a similarly impressive 62.4%, an improvement on even last year's record high. Both scores are 2% above the most challenging value added target (Fisher Family Trust D).

The average point score per candidate is 436, and per subject entry is over 40. This represents very pleasing value added given the students' attainment on entry. High grade performance has also risen with 8% of grades being at A*, and 16.5% at A. Overall A*/A performance is up from 21% in 2009 to almost 25% this year. Head teacher Clive Corbett says: "Again this year we are celebrating a marvellous set of GCSE results. These global figures of course mask a huge number of extraordinary individual results, achieved by hard working students supported by very committed staff. I would again like to congratulate all concerned – their fabulous efforts once again make a mockery of those nationally who claim that GCSE examinations are getting easier.”

Farewells

PHS said farewell to Tony Pitt who has retired after 49 years of teaching. He first joined PHS as the youngest deputy in 1973 and retired in 1996, but he returned almost immediately to set up the Psychology Department, which is still flourishing.

Also retiring from school were Kathleen Owen, who started as a technology teacher in 1999, before running the Health and Social Care Department and Chris Noble who has worked in the ICT and Science Departments for more than 10 years.

Jenny Rose is also leaving after nine years at the school to become Head of Modern Foreign Languages at St Augustine's High School in Redditch.
